The shelter of Carança

Located at an altitude of 1840 meters in the regional natural park of the Catalan Pyrenees, the refuge is a former pastoral shelter fitted out by members of the association "les chemins de Pyrène". This rustic refuge consists of a common room and a collective dormitory upstairs. Outside, the picnic tables, the barbecue area and the river provide a friendly setting after a hike of several hours. They say that coming to La Carança is like going back to "the old way": taking your time, without network, without internet, bathing in the river!

During the summer season, the refuge is staffed from mid-May until mid-September. To stay overnight or have meals, you must book by contacting the refuge. Accommodation is in the dormitory or under a tent if the dormitory is full.

During the winter season, the refuge is unstaffed but hikers can take shelter in a section that remains open, free, and without reservation. The dormitory can accommodate up to 13 people and a stove will keep you warm. The outdoor tap is closed and it's not guaranteed that the spring near the refuge will be flowing.

In both summer and winter seasons, it's possible to bivouac almost anywhere, completely self-sufficiently and respecting a few simple rules. That leaves a veeery wide choice of tent locations. If you still choose the area around the refuge, upon arrival, come meet us so we can point out the appropriate spots and share some information about this place we love, share, and protect.

The mountains are beautiful, they can be dangerous, and they must be cared for because they are sensitive. Before leaving, please inform yourself and prepare properly.

Lots of information about bivouacking on the page: https://www.parcsnationaux.fr/fr/des-decouvertes/visiter-et-semerveiller/la-reglementation-et-les-conseils/le-bivouac

Bivouacking means: ✔️ under the stars or in a compact small tent (not tall enough to stand in) ✔️ for one night only ✔️ setting up in an authorized location ✔️ setting up in the evening and leaving in the morning (times to be verified depending on location) ✔️ leaving as few traces as possible after departure (no waste, no food remains...)
